Three Types of Cross Belt Sorters for Efficient Package Handling

source:ARMADA SOLUTIONS GLOBAL INC.   Update time:2021-10-08

To optimize the use of cross belt sorters, three main methods are employed for package handling: automatic, manual semi-automatic, and fully manual. Each method offers different benefits based on the specific needs of the sorting center.

1. Automatic Package Supply

Automatic package supply systems typically consist of three to seven conveyor belts that accelerate packages through different stages—lead-in, acceleration, and sorting. The speed of the acceleration section increases gradually, with the efficiency ranging from 2000 to 4000 packages per hour. The more acceleration sections there are, the greater the package handling efficiency, though this also increases the required investment. Automatic systems have higher requirements for package orientation, ensuring that labels face up and packages are separated individually for accurate scanning.

2. Manual Semi-Automatic Package Supply

In this method, a combination of automatic and manual processes is used. The system consists of automatic supply stations and manual delivery stations, which can be set up as single or double stations. Single station setups have one operator per station, while double stations allow two operators to work simultaneously, increasing efficiency. The system processes between 1500 and 2500 packages per hour, depending on the number of operators and their proficiency. Manual semi-automatic systems have fewer requirements for package orientation and can handle stacked packages.

3. Manual Package Supply

Manual package supply involves placing packages directly into the sorting trolley, with the label face up. The efficiency of this method depends on the operator's speed, typically reaching around 1400 packages per hour. Due to the manual process, the system operates at a limited speed of 1.6 m/s, which can reduce the overall efficiency of the sorter. Manual systems are less demanding in terms of package orientation and can handle stacked packages without separation.

When selecting a package supply system, several factors must be considered, including the sorting machine's processing capacity, equipment investment, number of operators, and package requirements. For projects with lower efficiency demands and more sensitivity to investment costs, manual systems are often the best choice. For high-efficiency needs where packages are well-separated, automatic systems offer optimal performance.
